Biography

Hi, I’m G! I grew up in San Jose and went to Seattle University for college, where I did degrees in philosophy and computer science. I learned a lot from both disciplines—philosophy made me stronger at both reading and writing, and computer science helped me find my love for math. I’ve always loved writing essays, and it’s something I do for fun today. I’m excited to help current students find that love as well. Conversely, I never thought of myself as a math person until college. It was because I started studying applied versions of the subject like physics and logic that it started to really make sense to me. I want to help make that shift for others too, that lightbulb moment of “Hey, I’m actually pretty good at this!”

In my professional experience, I’ve taught science labs at The Tech Interactive in downtown San Jose to kids of all ages. I currently volunteer tutoring technology help through the San Jose Public Library. I’ve also been a teaching assistant for middle school computer science with the Silicon Valley Education Foundation, and a lead instructor with Camp Galileo, teaching art, robotics, and woodworking. I have a lot of experience with informal science education, especially with how to make it fun.

My goal as a teacher in general is to empower students. I want you to feel capable and confident tackling challenges that come your way. I want students to not just learn which equation to use but also how to be a resilient and curious learner. I love tailoring sessions to students’ interests and seeing our work together as collaborative. Ultimately, I came to tutoring because building individual relationships is important to me; it’s the best chance to immediately engage with students as a whole person.

My hobbies are making zines, writing essays, and drawing my friends and family.
