Metacognition in Math: The Art of Problem Solving

Confucius says, “Give a man a fish, and you’ll feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you’ve fed him for a lifetime.” This course will go one step further by teaching students how to teach themselves through the use of metacognitive skills: strategies that can help any student approach a complex problem effectively.

Course Description:

This course will include an overview of metacognition, and it will provide detailed instruction on how to execute two specific metacognitive strategies to solve challenging problems. We will use mathematics as the predominant subject matter, but the math will be tailored to match the ability level of the student.
