AP English Literature & Composition Primer

This class provides an introduction to AP English Literature and Composition, with a particular focus on reading, analyzing, and writing about poetry and prose.  This class will teach students how to synthesize and compare relevant texts, comprehend some of the more challenging literature and criticism in English, and produce clear, effective analytical writing.

Cost: $120/hr

Recommended hours: 10-15

Goals:

  • Students will learn specific methods of reading, annotation, and text analysis
  • Students will engage in various types of analytical, argumentative, and expository writing
  • Students will receive a preview of the AP English Literature Exam
  • Students will feel confident and prepared for the AP English Literature Class

Course Description:

This class is designed for students with reservations about taking the AP English Literature class and for those who are looking to get ahead. Reading challenging texts and writing complex essays are requirements of the AP course, and this class will provide a framework for doing both tasks effectively.  Topics this course covers include argumentative writing, literary analysis, and poetry interpretation. We also integrate the study of grammar, annotation, and quotation choice into our study.
