Biography

When I was a child, my mother, a math educator herself, gave me logic puzzles and math problems to do for fun. I have loved math ever since. I find math beautiful as a subject in and of itself, as well as a useful tool for solving complex problems in other academic disciplines. Inspired by my love of math and interest in biological sciences, I studied mathematics at the University of Richmond, with minors in biology and health studies.

Prior to coming to AJ Tutoring, I worked as a mathematics tutor for three years at the University of Richmond. I have also worked with high school students on pre-calculus and algebra, as well as tutoring middle school math. I really enjoy working one-on-one with students, establishing relationships, and encouraging them in their mathematics studies. It brings me great joy when working through example problems or explaining a concept in a new way helps something “click” for students. I also love when I can relate a mathematics topic to something in a subject of interest to the student, such as in biology or economics. It is my goal that all the students I work with gain confidence in their mathematics abilities and, hopefully, come to enjoy it a little more.

In my tutoring practice, I like to alternate between working example problems alongside students, giving mini lectures and explanations of the material, and having students work problems independently and assisting if problems arise. Each tutoring session is unique and depends on the individual student’s needs, interests, and comfort with the material. I strive to help students understand the concepts behind the problems they are doing, rather than just memorizing the steps for solving a particular type of problem.

Outside of tutoring, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, playing the flute, cooking, hiking, and rock climbing.
