Biography

As a native of West Virginia, I attended West Virginia University, majoring in mechanical engineering. After working in industry for five years, I returned to academia to obtain a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in mechanical engineering, while minoring in applied mathematics. I remained in Silicon Valley to work in two large research labs, where I demonstrated adaptability for applying basic scientific principles to a variety of technologies. I also co-founded two start-up companies—the second of which was focused on optical technologies applied to biomedical applications.

I first began tutoring high school students in math and science while working as a parent volunteer for Bay Area theater groups. I found it satisfying to assist students with learning mathematical and scientific principles, and, in turn, my students gave me a new perspective on material that I didn’t use often on the job.

Once I stopped working in industry, I began tutoring full-time. I have adapted my practice to use everyday life to teach scientific concepts, and I continually work to improve my understanding of the material I teach through a variety of resources. Over the years, I have worked with many students with learning differences and truly believe all students can succeed given the proper circumstances. I especially enjoy seeing a student’s face shine when they have worked hard to master a concept.

Outside of tutoring, I enjoy exercising, hiking, and walking my dog. In addition, as an avid music fan, I spend time learning to play the piano.
