Biography

I am a South Bay native, and I began tutoring my friends and classmates in high school. Most schools stress repetition and memorization over understanding, especially in math courses. Both my friends and I experienced this, and so I took the time to comprehend the basics of algebra on my own. Once I discovered that the concepts were in fact quite straightforward, I was able to see problems differently. I began sharing my understanding with my classmates through tutoring and helping them master the same understanding.

I continued tutoring throughout my years at UC Davis, where I earned a B.S. in psychology. After graduating, I continued my passion for teaching for eleven years as a self-employed private tutor before joining the AJ community as a test prep and academic tutor. Here at AJ, I value our rigorous approach to the SAT and ACT as well as our focus on facilitating a deep understanding of the concepts underlying all sections of the tests. I enjoy working with students to help them develop the strategies necessary to comprehend difficult reading passages and excel in what is often an intimidating section of the test.

Regardless of the academic level, larger classes tend to discourage questions and leave students with a sense that mathematics is not for them. Since not all students learn at the same pace, or with the same methods, they tend to become frustrated and disappointed in a large group setting. 1-on-1 tutoring is ideal for increasing a student’s understanding of concepts and facilitating their academic growth. I believe it is important for students to comprehend the underlying theory behind each level of mathematics, rather than memorizing rote steps to complete a task. With the concepts firmly in place, students have the tools to approach varied problems and break more complicated questions down into their pieces.

When not working, I can usually be found reading or out with friends.
